GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Holy Cross Saints hockey team returned to the ice for the first time in 2014 with a road series against Aquinas (Mich.) College. A tough series against a talented team had the Saints drop the opener on Friday evening 4-1. Nine combined goals were scored in Saturday's series finale as the Saints dropped the series to Aquinas by a final score of 6-3. The Saints fall to 17-9 on the season.
The first period in Friday night's opener provided ample opportunities for both teams as a combined 24 shots were taken. Aquinas was first to strike at the 13:32 mark of the first period as Doug Zelenka finished off the feed from Greg Baranyai to give Aquinas the 1-0 lead. Freshman goaltended Devin Nyers (Mishawaka, Ind.) had 12 saves in the period as the game headed to intermission with the Saints trailing 1-0.
Aquinas added two goals in the second period to extend their lead to 3-0 despite being outshot by the Saints, 14-9. Jake Radde (Granger, Ind.) scored on the power play in the third period for the Saints to cut the deficit to 3-1 but Aquinas answered with the final goal of the game on the power play to defeat the Saints in game one by a final score of 4-1.
The Saints outshot Aquinas 40-26 for the game. Devin Nyers finished with 22 saves.
Aquinas was quick to get things started in Saturday's series finale with the first goal of the game at the 2:32 mark of the period. B.J. Kolcz (A) (Marysville, Mich.) responded for the Saints on the power play to tie the game at 1-1. With less than five minutes remaining, though, Aquinas would net their own power play goal to take a 2-1 lead to the second period.
Just like in the first period, Aquinas struck quickly in the second as Cody Edwards extended the lead to 3-1. A slashing penalty on Aquinas gave the Saints another opportunity on the power play. Doni Gendel (A) (South Bend, Ind.) scored the second power play goal of the game for the Saints with help from Drew Brodbeck (A) (Stillwater, Minn.) and Tommy Lyons (C) (Valparaiso, Ind.) to end the second period trailing only 3-2.
Back-to-back goals by Aquinas in the third period extended their lead to 5-2 before Drew Brodbeck (A) netted the shorthanded goal for the Saints to make it a 5-3 game. Cody Edwards scored the final goal of the game for Aquinas on the power play as the Saints would come up just short in the series finale falling by a final score of 6-3.
Devin Nyers finished with 30 saves on 36 shots faced.
Holy Cross (17-9) will resume action next weekend on the road against Northwood (Mich.).
