(Joliet, IL) A season high four goals in the first half gave the Holy Cross Men's Soccer team a victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe St. Francis.
St. Francis was playing for the final spot in the CCAC tournament, but the Saints of Holy Cross had other plans. It didn't take long for the Saints to score as midfielder Robert Campos blasted a shot from 20 yards out. Sergio Del Campo recorded the assist on the play. Three minutes later Tyler Ormsby headed in a ball off a corner kick taken by freshman Briant Estrella. Not to be out done, junior Joe Esch headed in a ball in the 15th minute off another Briant Estrella corner. Rahim Mmadi concluded the days scoring in the 40th minute after receiving a great ball from his brother Steven Mmadi.
The Saints were held scoreless in the second half, but the 4 - 0 score held up to give the team a much deserved victory. Goalkeeper Damian Marciniak had 5 saves in the shut-out.
"It was a great emotional release for the guys to go out and see all their hard work culminate in a four goal breakout for a team that has scored three goals all season," said Head Coach Dustan Harley "We have played some nice soccer and more than anything else have really come together as a team this season. This is a great group of guys that I have been blessed to coach this season."
The Saints end the year with a 3-14-1 overall record, and a 2-8 record in the always tough CCAC. "The season wasn't the most successful on the field, and no, we didn't get the results we were after as often as we would have liked," said Coach Harley. "But this is a team that has built a strong foundation for the future of the program."
With a year under their belt in the CCAC, and only one senior on the team (Pat Kohn), the Saints will look to improve upon their record next season.
