(Berrien Springs, Mich.) Trailing by as many as 22 points against Andrews University, the Cardinals looked they were on their way to a huge victory over the Saints Monday night in a non-conference match-up.
On October 30th, these two teams met in the McKenna Arena on the campus of Holy Cross. The Cardinals bested the Saints 77 - 74 in a thrilling opening season game. Trailing 38 - 31 at half, the Saints stormed back into the game pressing the Cardinals forcing turnovers and bad shots.
With a 1:30 remaining in the game the Saints pulled within 1 point. However, the Cardinals hit their free-throws down the stretch and held of the Saints 67 - 62. Dane Okuda (Huntington Beach, Cal.) led the Saints with 10 points and 3 assists. Taylor Williams (South Bend, Ind.) and Mark Wilkins (Chicago, Ill.) each chipped in 9 points.
"We learned that this team doesn't quit no matter how far behind we may be," said first year Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn. "We always want to come away with a win, but this team showed some heart in the second half."
Leading all scorers was Andrew's Matthew Little with 19 points. Ryan Little chipped in 15 points and Junior Orelus added 12 points for the Cardinals.
The Saints will return to action this weekend in the Sienna Heights Tournament. Holy Cross will play Sienna Heights on Friday night at 6pm.
