(Deerfield, Ill.) Behind freshman forward Lindsey Steffen's (Nappanee, Ind.) 12 points and 15 rebounds as well as freshman Jillian DeLucia's (Fishers, Ind.) 17 points the Saints returned to Trinity International for a quarterfinal conference match-up.
Coming off a road loss to the Trojans last Saturday the Saints traveled back to Trinity International Tuesday evening in the first round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) tournament.
Tied at 6 at the 16:18 mark in the first half both teams were looking to assert themselves early. However, it was the Trojans taking an early lead going on a 14-4 run that gave them 10 point lead. Both teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the half, but TIU had extended their lead to 14.
Megan Eve (Scottsburg, Ind.) opened the second half nailing a 3-pointer to pull the Saints within 11. However, Holy Cross could not get any closer as Trinity led by as many as 22 midway through the second half.
Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Mich.)added 14 points, and Tanesha Vanardo (Markham, Ill.) finished with 12 points but the Saints eventually fell 85-70.
Holy Cross was outrebounded 44-36 on the night but only gave up 8 second chance points. Trinity International forced 20 turnovers and turned them into 25 points including 19 in the first half.
The Trojans went nearly 44% from the field including 7-of-17 from behind the arc and managed to hold the Saints to just 36.4% from the field and 18% from 3-point range.
The Saints conclude the 2010-11 season with a 5-26 record in just their second season of competition. Last year the Saints also went 5-26. Malinowski led the Saints in scoring with 16 points a game while Steffen averaged 15.4 points and 9 rebounds.
