(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team took on the crosstown rival Indiana University South Bend today at McKenna Arena at the Pfeil Center, as Holy Cross looked to bounce back from a loss earlier in the week to #24 ranked St. Xavier Cougars.
The Saints came out hitting on all cylinders as they took a 21-13 lead midway through the second half. They would push that lead to 36-26 at the end of the first half thanks to a 6-0 run.
The Saints were led by former Riley High School standouts JT Breveard (South Bend, IN) and Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN). Williams had a great showing in the first half scoring 8 points and pulling down 7 rebounds. Breveard packed the scoring sheet for the Saints with 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in the first half. Freshman Darrell McIntyre (Indianapolis, IN) chipped in 6 points for the Saints as well.
IUSB's Henry Smith led all scorers in the first half netting 12 points and tallying 3 rebounds of his own. The Titans Chris Beam posted 8 points to hold Holy Cross to a 10 point lead.
The second half would opened up as a battle and IUSB would cut the lead to 5 points with ten minutes remaining in the game. The Saints pushed back on the defensive end when they went on a huge 6-0 run. All six points were scored off of lay-ups that resulted from steals. Breveard had 4 points in the span of 15 seconds. Then a thunderous dunk by Taylor Williams would cap the run, and push the lead to 11 points before IUSB called a much a needed timeout.
The Titans didn't backdown and they cut the lead to 3 points late in the game at 59-56. Two free throws by Williams put the Saints up 5 points with 44.5 seconds left. A 3 pointer by IUSB's Steven Heatherly kept the crowd on their feet as he cut the lead to 2 points with 29.1 seconds left.
Breveard hit two free throws with 22.9 seconds left to push the lead back up to four points. Then a bizarre play happened. An IUSB player attempted to call a timeout during a loose ball situation with 14.7 seconds left. The only problem was that IUSB did not have any timeouts left. A technical foul was given to IUSB, and Breveard made 1 of 2 at the line pushing the lead to 5 points, and it's eventual final score at 66-61.
This was Holy Cross' first victory over IUSB. The Saints were winless in it's previous five matches against the Titans.
"This was just a great win for our team and program. To win against a quality opponent and crosstown rival like IUSB is just great for our guys. I am truly proud of the way our boys battled, and won tonight. They earned this victory," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.
The Saints were led by seniors Williams and Breveard. Williams recorded a double-double netting 18 points and 14 rebounds, and had a season high 3 blocks. Breveard had a game high and season best 24 points to lead the Saints.
Holy Cross defensely held IUSB to 61 points, Holy Cross went 13 for 17 from, and made some crucial free throws down the stretch.
"I was really proud of the way Taylor and JT played tonight. They really stepped up as Senior leaders tonight. It was great to see them respond, and I thought our team fed off their energy they put out today for the entire game," said Coach Schermerhorn.
Steven Heatherly led IUSB with 23 points. Henry Smith added 20 points and 7 rebounds for the Titans.
The Saints are now 2-5 on the season. They go on the road Wednesday November 30th to play their first game in the CCAC against Trinity Christian College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Titans fall back to .500 as they are now 4-4 on the season.
