Women's Basketball - Wed, Jan. 25, 2012
(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Women's Basketball Team hosted the visiting Trolls of Trinity Christian tonight in CCAC Division II basketball action.
This was a much anticpated game as Holy Cross needed a win to move up to fourth in the standings, and Trinity Christian could gain some breathing room in the top four of the standings with a win on the road.  In the end, the Saints defended their home court as they controlled most of the game beating Trinity Christian 78-66.
The Trolls opened up to an early 3-0 lead, but that was all they could muster in the afternoon as the Saints poured it on for the remaining of the half.  Trinity Christian only scored 18 more points as the Saints tightened up on the defensive end, and got into an early rhythm offensively.  The Saints used the strong play to open up a 41-21 lead at the half.
"I thought it was one of the best halves we played all year.  We started a bit slow, but once we got going it was truly a joy to see the girls play that well," said Head Coach Aimee Litka.
Junior Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, MI) led the Saints with 14 first half points.  Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, IN) added 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
The second half was more of the same for the Saints as they played strong early on to build a lead as high 24 points.  The Trolls battled back, but the lead was just too much to handle for the vistors as Holy Cross won their second game in a row beating Trinity Christian 78-66.
"It was a much needed win for us.  We are now sitting in 4th place, and we would host a tournament game if the season ended now.  Unfortunately, the season doesn't end now, and we need to keep this momentum going into our game against Judson on Saturday," said Coach Litka.
Malinowski led all scorers with 19 points.  Sophomore Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, MI) had a great game off the bench scoring 16 points for the Saints.  Steffen continued her great play scoring 16 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.  Freshman Maggie Gondeck (Michigan City, IN) who was inserted into the starting lineup had a fantastic game scoring 9 points, and hauling in a team high 9 rebounds for Holy Cross.
The Saints have now won two games in a row improving their record to 7-16 overall and 3-4 in the CCAC which is good for fourth in the standings.  They play Judson who sits at 2-4 in the CCAC at Judson this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
