Hockey - Mon, Feb. 6, 2012
(Notre Dame, IN)  It was another quality weekend for the Holy Cross Men's Hockey Team as they won both games over the weekend against the visiting Musketeers of Xavier University.
Game One
It was a special night for the first game of the set on Friday as senior Steve Stetz (Uniontown, MI) was being honored for his four years of play as a Holy Cross Hockey Player.  The game went well for the host Saints as they honored Stetz, and various hockey alumni were in attendance by beating Xavier 6-3 Friday night.
The Saints got out to a great start as goals by sophomores Tyler Joy (Hobart, IN), Drew Brodbeck (Stillwater, MN), and junior Sean Root (Livonia, MI) helped the Saints build a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Musketeers fought back early in the second period scoring two goals in the second period, and it appeared as if this was going to be a close game with the score 3-2 in favor of the Saints heading in the second intermission.
The Saints responded well in the final period scoring three goals, and only giving up one in the period.  Goals by junior Tyler Schmatz (South Bend, IN), sophomore Sam Soukop (Stillwater, MN), and Root helped push the Saints to the win over Xavier 6-3 Friday night.
Sophomore Brad Hajec (Dearborn, MI) played fantastic on the night saving 46 out of 49 shots on the night.  The Saints were lead by Root who scored 2 goals and dished out 1 assist for 3 points total on the night.  Schmatz and Brodbeck had 2 points on the night each recording a goal and an assist.
Game Two
The second game of the set was a hard fought game for the entire afternoon on Saturday.  The game was tied going into the second period after freshman Austin Pedue (Granger, IN) knotted the game at one a piece with four minutes remaining in the period.
The second period proved to be pretty tough for the host Saints.  After a goal from Root, the Musketeers rattled off three unanswered goals to take 4-2 lead midway through the second period.  The Saints got one of the goals back after sophomore Brendon Gendel (South Bend, IN) put one through the pipes with four minutes remaining in the period.  Xavier, however, pushed the lead back up to 5-3 scoring just a minute later to lead the Saints at the end of the third period.
It was gut check time for the Saints heading into the third period.  They needed to bounce back quickly if they were going to sweep the visiting Musketeers.
The Saints finally responded as Gendel scored to cut the lead to 5-4 with eleven minutes remaining in the game.  Senior Shane Leo (South Bend, IN)  tied the game a minute and a half later, and the Saints had the momentum now to win this game.
It was back and forth the rest of the game, but the Saints' resolve came through in the end.  Gendel put home the game winner on a pass from Pedue with just over a minute remaining to secure the come from behind victory over the visiting Musketeers of Xavier University 6-5 Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Ethan Palmer (Granger, IN) played the first two periods saving 21 of the 26 shots he faced.  Hajec entered into the game at the end of the second period, and saved all 15 shots he faced in the win.
Gendel had a great afternoon finishing with a hat trick and recording an assist for 4 total points on the afternoon.  Pedue finished the game with a total of 3 points scoring a goal and dishing out 2 assists.
With the win the Saints have gone over the .500 mark for the season with a record of 12-11-1.  They play their final game of the season at home at the Ice Box against Thomas Aquinas at 2:00 p.m. on February 11th.
