(Whiting, Ind.) The Holy Cross baseball program won the 2012 Hoosier Wooden Bat Classic over the weekend. During the tournament, the Saints defeated Grace College 6-3 on Friday, and Illinois Tech. 4-3 in extra innings on Saturday. Freshmen pitcher Jared Jayne (Naperville, Ill.) took home the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.
"Jared pitched 7 strong innings for us and our offense did a fantastic job of executing all game long," said Saints head coach Brian Blondell. "I was really impressed with how we were able to continue to put pressure on their defense, and execute when we needed to. Hats off to Jared for pitching so well, and to the rest of our offense for backing him up and getting the job done.
The Saints pulled out a 4-3 win over Illinois Tech. in 11 innings to win the tournament on Saturday evening.
"I'm really proud of our guys and how they played the game," said head coach Brian Blondell. "We did not play our best defense or execute offensively, but our pitching staff (Andrew Salazar, Blake Comella, and Alex Erwin) did a fantastic job of keeping us in the game."
"Our kids never quit and I'm very proud of how they responded in the tough situations."
The Saints will close out their fall season on Saturday, October 27th on the road against local rival Bethel College.
The first pitch is set to be thrown at 11:00am EST.
