(Notre Dame, Ind.) The Holy Cross Saints men's soccer team concluded Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season play Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime win over the Eagles on Senior Night.
A physical game from the first whistle, the Saints came out moving the ball extremely well and generating a number of good looks.
"I thought this was the best game we've played all year," said Saints head coach Omar Gallo. "I was really impressed with our ability to get the ball in the right spots for guys to make plays."
Despite the strong offensive momentum for the Saints early on, the Eagles struck first in the 16th minute of the 1st half.
At the end of the 1st half, the Saints outshot the Eagles 13-4, but trailed 1-0.
The 2nd half proved to be another intense half as both teams had their moments controlling the ball.
Delgado's goal was the last we would see in regulation as the Saints would head to overtime for the 5th time this season.
Senior night proved to be a memorable one Delgado as just under 3 minutes into the overtime he finished off a pass from freshman forward Alberto Marchi (Hudson, Ohio) for his 2nd goal of the game, and the game winner for the Saints.
A celebratory coach had a lot to say on his team effort.
"The guys played their tails off tonight," said coach Omar. "We got down 1-0 early but didn't stop our pressure. The guys knew that if they kept playing their game good things would happen."
"I'm extremely proud of both of our seniors and that we were able to send them out with a win," continued coach Omar. "Luis had a heck of a game getting both of our goals; what a way to end a great senior season!"
Briant Estrella (Ameca Jalisco, Mexico) continued to prove how valuable he is to the Saints back line down the stretch.
"Briant has done an incredible job this year, and I'm so proud of how he's elevated his game as the season went on," said coach Omar. "His conditioning this year has been the best of his career, and it has definitely helped us on the field. Briant is an outstanding kid, and a very valuable player to our team's success."
The win for the Saints brings their season record to 9-6-2 (6-3-2 CCAC). The 9 regular season wins and 6 conference wins set Holy Cross men's soccer team records.
Holy Cross is also set to play their first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) match in program history. Stay tuned to hcsaints.com to find out who the Saints will be taking on.
