NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Pazia Speed scored a game-high 33 points as the Foresters of Huntington (Ind.) University defeated the Saints 69-62 in a home non-conference matchup. Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) led the way for the Saints with 26 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Kari Barnes (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored a career-high 18 points. The Saints fall to 1-3 on the season with the loss.
An aggressive Huntington squad came out to a fast start in Tuesday night's non-conference meeting as they developed an 11 point lead with 5:26 remaining in the first half. The first half scoring from Steffen, Barnes and Carmen Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind.) helped keep the Saints in the game down the stretch as they closed the first half trailing the Foresters 30-26. Lindsey Steffen led all scorers at the half with 13 points.
A 12-to-2 run in the first four minutes of the second half by Huntington gave the Foresters their largest lead of the game at 14 points with 16:19 to play in the game. Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, Mich.) capped off a 12-to-1 scoring run for the Saints which closed the gap to three points at 43-40. Unfortunately for the Saints, this would be the closest they would get to the Foresters down the stretch.
Pazia Speed scored 21 of her game-high 33 points in the second half while knocking down all nine free-throw attempts. For the game, Speed got to the foul line 17 times and knocked down every shot.
Lindsey Steffen and Kari Barnes each scored 13 points in the second half for the Saints. Steffen finished with a team-high 26 points and 7 rebounds while Barnes set new career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (7).
Turnovers were an issue for both teams: Holy Cross turned 14 Huntington turnovers into 26 points while the Foresters turned 26 Saints turnovers into 24 points.
Despite outshooting the Foresters from the floor (46.4% to 38.9%), Huntington did most of its damage at the foul line. The Foresters went 27-of-35 (77.1%) from the line compared to the Saints 6-of-10 (60%). Steffen had eight of the 10 attempts and all six makes.
Holy Cross (1-3) will return the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 9 as they play host to Lourdes (Ohio) University at 1:00 p.m.
