MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The Holy Cross men's basketball team kicked off night one of their two-game inclusion in the 2013 Gates Automotive Classic at Bethel College on Friday night against the Knights of Marian University. The Knights took control from start to finish as struggles on both ends of the floor hurt the Saints in the 71-44 loss. Holy Cross drops to 1-2 with the loss.
Brandon Evans (Grand Rapids, Mich.) tied the score at 2-2 in the early stages on Friday night before an ensuing 10-to-0 run by Marian put the Saints in a bind. The Knights extended their lead to as many as 26 points in the first half before Holy Cross closed the last four minutes of the half on a 13-to-2 run to cut the lead to 15 points.
The Saints shot the ball at a decent clip in the first half (9-of-19) but turned the ball over 10 times.
Two free-throws from Drew Moore (Dayton, Ohio) cut the lead to as low as 13 points with 11:37 left in the game before Marian found their groove on offense and defense. Over the last 11 minutes the Knights held the Saints to just 10 points as they would fall in the opening night of the Gates Automotive Classic by a final score of 71-44.
Clayton Webb (Dallas, Texas) led the Saints with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Marian forced 19 Saints turnovers for the game.
Holy Cross will wrap up their participation in the Gates Automotive Classic on Saturday afternoon as they take on the host Bethel College Pilots. The two have met once already this season where the Pilots defeated the Saints in the season opener 80-56. The game is set to tip-off at 3:00 p.m. EST. Live video can be found here.
