The Saints wrapped up 2013 with a 76-46 win in the Davenport Holiday Tournament on Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Holy Cross wrapped up its participation in the Davenport Holiday Tournament with their second game in as many days on Saturday afternoon against the Mustangs of Marygrove College. After a difficult loss on Friday evening against No. 4 ranked Davenport, the Saints responded on Saturday for a 76-46 victory over the Mustangs. Five Saints players reached double figures in scoring in the game as the Saints shot 45.9% from the field for the game. With the win the Saints close out 2013 with a 4-11 overall record.

The early stages of the first half on Saturday afternoon with five ties and eight lead changes. Trailing by two midway through the first half, the Saints rallied off a 21-4 run to take a 15-point lead with 2:01 remaining. Maggie Gondeck (Michigan City, Ind.) scored a layup with 22 seconds left to give the Saints a 36-21 lead at the break.

The Saints were active on both ends of the floor in the first half scoring 13 points off turnovers and holding a 6-1 advantage on second-chance points. Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) led all scorers in the first half with eight points off the bench as the Saints shot 43.8% from the floor while holding Marygrove to just 20.0%.

Kari Barnes (Fort Wayne, Ind.) kicked things off in the second half with an early three-pointer as the Saints opened up with an 18-point lead over Marygrove. An ensuing 7-0 run by the Mustangs cut the Saints lead to 11 points before another three-pointer from Kari Barnes capped off a 7-0 Holy Cross run to extend their lead back up to 18 points with 14:59 remaining. From that point forward it was all Holy Cross. Once the Saints extended their lead to 20 points at the midway mark of the second half, Marygrove would never get within 20 points for the remainder of the game. Shana Anderson (Bourbon, Ind.) drained a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining to put the stamp on the game as the Saints defeated the Mustangs 76-46 to wrap up 2013.

The Saints got plenty of production from their bench in Saturday's meeting with Marygrove holding a 39-11 advantage for the game. Kari Barnes, one of five Saints to reach double figures in scoring, finished with a team-high 14 point performance. Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, Mich.) added 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting with seven assists and Maggie Gondeck contributed a 10-point and 12 rebound double-double to round things off for the Saints.

After struggling to shoot the ball on Friday, Holy Cross responded with an impressive 45.9% from the field while holding the Mustangs to 21.1%. Marygrove also attempted 10 more field goals than the Saints for the game.

Holy Cross (4-11) will now move forward to 2014 back at McKenna Arena on Saturday, January 8 against CCAC-foe Calumet College of St. Joseph. The game will be the first of two straight at McKenna Arena for the Saints and will tip-off at 1:00 p.m. EST.
