Holy Cross fell to No. 6 Cardinal Stritch on the road Wednesday night

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team hit the road on Wednesday evening to take on the No. 6 ranked Wolves of Cardinal Stritch University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action. A slow start in the first half consisting of 17 turnovers and a field goal percentage of 29.4% put the Saints in a hole. The team rallied in the second half to outscore the Wolves 38-32 but ultimately fell in the contest 76-59. Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, Mich.) scored a season-high 15 points to lead the Saints while Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) added her second double-double of the year.

Having won their last 16 games, the Cardinal Stritch Wolves kicked things off with a 24-0 run to open up the game. Francesca McCarthy (Terre Haute, Ind.) got the Saints on the scoreboard for the first time at the 11:42 mark with two free-throws. The Wolves would extend their lead to as many as 28 points in the half before the Saints finally found some scoring. A 9-4 by the Saints to close out the half brought the score to 44-21.

The Saints struggled shooting the ball in the first half as they hit just 5-of-17 (29.4%) shots from the field. Additionally, they turned the ball over 17 times during the first 20 minutes which the Wolves turned into 20 points.

As the second half began, the Saints began to score the ball much more consistently. Lindsey Steffen capped off a 13-5 Holy Cross run to cut the lead to 15 points with 15:23 remaining in the game. The Wolves, though, would extend their lead to 21 points with 7:43 left to play.

The Saints would continue to attack offensively in the second half as the clock wound down, cutting the lead to as low as 13 points with 32 seconds remaining. The comeback, however, would come up just short as the Wolves held on for the 76-59 win despite being outscored 38-32 in the second half.

Other Notables

Mary Fitzgerald scored 10 of her team-high 15 points in the second half. The 15-point performance for Fitzgerald a season-high.

Lindsey Steffen scored all 14 of her points in the second half. Steffen added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

The Saints (3-15, 2-7 CCAC) will continue on the road on Saturday, January 25 against Judson University (8-13, 3-6 CCAC) at 6:00 p.m. EST.
