(Notre Dame, IN) The men's soccer team opened their 2009 season at home against the Archers from Moody Bible Institute (Chicago, IL). The Saints controlled most of the game keeping the Archers defense on their heels.
The Archers struck first in the 29th minute as Thaddeus Nichols beat Saints goalkeeper Damian Marciniak. Nichols had just entered the game less than a minute prior to giving Moody a 1-0 advantage. Three minutes later the Saints drew even off a rebound shot by transfer Tyler Ormsby.
The Saints continued to put pressure on in the second half, but were having trouble finishing. Archer's goalie Joel Barber remained poised as the Saints offense kept mounting attacks. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
Two ten minute sudden death half's were to be played to decide a winner. It looked as though the Saints were about to break through, but in the 98th minute Archers forward Samuel Amis broke free and scored the game winning goal. Holy Cross outshot Moody 19 to 15. Marciniak ended up with 6 saves in the game.
The Saints travel to Viterbo University for two games this weekend. On Saturday the Saints take on the University of Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls ended the 2008 season with a 10-5-5 record. On Sunday the Saints will play host Viterbo. Last year the Saints beat Viterbo 2-1 in overtime.
