SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Holy Cross hockey team picked up their fourth consecutive win over the weekend with a sweep over the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils in Southfield, Mich. The Saints used 15 goals over the course of the weekend to knock off the host Blue Devils 7-2 and 8-4 on their way to a program-best 22 wins.
"A great effort by our guys again this weekend," head coach T.J. Lyons stated. "We've played a tough schedule this year and the guys did a great job answering the bell each night out. Hats off to them for this impressive season."
Drew Brodbeck (A) (Stillwater, Minn.) got the scoring started for the Saints in Friday night's series opener to open up the 1-0 advantage in the first period.
With the 1-0 lead at the break, the Saints used a strong second period where they added goals from Nick Wink (Western Springs, Ill.), Mike Pilcher (St. Louis, Mo.) and B.J. Kolcz (A) (Marysville, Mich.) to open up a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.
Kolcz added two more goals for his second hat trick of the season while Nick Wink added his second of the night to help the Saints cruise to a 7-2 opening game victory over Lawrence Tech. Kolcz led the Saints with a game-high four points while captain Tommy Lyons (C) (Valparaiso, Ind.) dished out three assists.
Brad Hajec (Dearborn, Mich.) 22-of-24 shots he faced in picking up the victory.
The Saints were quick to strike in Saturday's finale as Drew Brodbeck (A) scored the first goal four minutes into action. Brodbeck would continue the strong start to the game for the Saints with his second of the night just minutes later to open up a 2-0 lead. Lawrence Tech responded with a goal of their own just before the end of the period as the score was locked at 2-1 through 20 minutes.
Just like the start of the game, senior Drew Brodbeck (A) got the Saints going quickly in the second period netting his third of the game and giving the team a 3-1 advantage. The Saints continued to control the tempo in the period as they added two more goals and took a 5-2 lead to the third period.
The Saints held an 8-3 lead with five minutes remaining in the game before the Blue Devils added the final goal of the night to make it a final score of 8-4.
The Final Series
The Saints (22-10) will wrap up the 2013-2014 season this weekend at home against Lansing Community College. Prior to Friday night's game, all six seniors will be honored for their accomplishments as Holy Cross student-athletes. The puck is set to drop on Friday at 7:15 p.m. EST.
