The Saints dished out a program-best 33 assists in their win over NCAA Div. III opponent Illinois Tech

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team got back into the win column on Monday night in their final non-conference matchup of the season with an 84-34 victory over the Scarlet Hawks of Illinois Tech. Maggie Gondeck (Michigan, City, Ind.) recorded her third double-double of the season while freshman Shana Anderson (Bourbon, Ind.) contributed her best performance of the season as the Saints snapped their previous four-game losing skid.

After giving up two early baskets to the Scarlet Hawks, the Saints kicked it into high gear on both ends of the floor in Monday night's non-conference finale. Trailing by three two minutes into the game, the Saints put together a 26-1 run to open up a 22-point advantage over Illinois Tech at the midway point of the first half. A layup from Maggie Gondeck extended their lead t0 30 points within the final minute before Lauren Capuano added a basket before the horn to make it a 47-19 Saints advantage at the break.

The Saints were active on the defensive end throughout the first 20 minutes forcing 15 turnovers which they converted into 20 points. The duo of Maggie Gondeck and freshman Shana Anderson took control of the offense accounting for 14 points apiece. Gondeck added seven rebounds in the half while Anderson went 6-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from distance as the Saints shot 47.7% from the floor.

The offensive firepower from the first half transitioned nicely to the second as Saints quickly extended their lead to 41 points following the basket from Megan Eve (Scottsburg, Ind.) at the 14:47 mark. Shana Anderson knocked down her third three-pointer of the game to open up a 48-point advantage before the Scarlet Hawks answered back with a 6-0 run of their own. Holy Cross continued to pressure Illinois Tech on the defensive end forcing 12 turnovers and grabbing eight steals in the process.

Eight of nine active players scored at least two points in the second half with Megan Eve leading the charge with 12. In the final 20 minutes, Eve went 6-of-8 for the floor with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

With just over eight minutes remaining in the game, the Saints held the Scarlet Hawks to four points over that span while outscoring them 12-4 and picking up a much needed home victory.

Three players reached double figures in the game and all nine finished with at least three points. Maggie Gondeck led the charge with an 18-point and 12-rebound double-double. Shana Anderson added a season-high 17 points in 23 minutes off the bench while Megan Eve contributed a season-high 14 points.

  • Senior Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) set new season-highs in rebounds (12) and assists (8).
  • Jillian DeLucia (Fishers, Ind.) finished the game with a game-high nine assists. She's recorded 17 assists to eight turnovers over the past two games.
  • Maggie Gondeck tied Lindsey Steffen with her third double-double of the season.
  • The Saints scored all 84 points without attempting a free-throw.
