HAMMOND, Ind. – Senior Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) became the first player in Saints women's basketball history to record 1,000 career rebounds on Wednesday night but the Saints fell on the road to No. 18 Purdue Calumet in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action by a final score of 79-57.
The Saints offense opened up strong Wednesday night against the No. 18 Peregrines building up a 14-12 advantage following a Maggie Gondeck (Michigan City, Ind.) bucket at the 9:25 mark of the half. Following the bucket from Gondeck, the Peregrines showed why they're ranked in the NAIA Div. II top-25: Patrice McBee jumpstarted a 21-7 run for the Peregrines to open up their largest lead of the half at 33-19 with 2:19 to play. Kristin Nitka (Chicago, Ill.) knocked down a three-pointer with seven seconds to bring the Saints within 11 points as Purdue Calumet took a 39-28 lead to the break.
Jillian DeLucia (Fishers, Ind.) paved the way for the Saints offensively in the first half with seven points and five assists as the team finished 11-of-34 (32.4%) from the field. Maggie Gondeck and Kristin Nitka added five points apiece. Cassidy Deno and Patrice McBee led the way for the Peregrines with 10 points.
The Peregrines kicked off the second half with an 11-1 run to open up a 50-29 lead with less than four minutes gone by. Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, Mich.) would bring the Saints within 17 points, but it was the execution for the Peregrines that was ultimately too much for the Saints. Purdue Calumet would extend their lead to as many as 27 points in the late stages before the Saints closed out the game on a 5-0 run to bring us to a final score of 79-57.
Jillian DeLucia finished with a team-high 13 points and seven assists while Lindsey Steffen added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
Patrice McBee was one of five Peregrines to finish in double figures with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Saints finished the game 22-for-61 (36.1%) while Purdue Calumet went 28-for-74 (37.8%).
Needing just two rebounds to join the 1,000 rebound club, senior Lindsey Steffen grabbed her second rebound at the 17:57 mark of the first half. With seven rebounds for the game, Steffen extends her program-best total to 1,005 career rebounds. Additionally, Steffen sits atop the leaderboard in total career points with 1,656 making her the first player in program history to record 1,000 points and rebounds.
