NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The success of the 2013 Holy Cross men's soccer team has once again propelled several players with an opportunity participate in the Premier Development League (PDL) this upcoming summer. After sending three players last summer, head coach Omar Gallo will have five players from the 2013 team playing this year between the Chicago Inferno and St. Louis Lions.
"I'm very excited and honored as a coach to have five players from our team playing in the PDL," coach Gallo stated. "This league allows these players the opportunity to play with the best players at all collegiate levels. The quality of play and the experience within teams and their coaching staff set the bar high for players that play in this league. We had three players play in the PDL last summer and each of them had their best season this past year."
Alex Clarke (JR/Liverpool, England) and Iain McTurk (FR/Copenhagen, Denmark) will join the St. Louis Lions later this spring as two of the five players joining the PDL. For Clarke, this will be his second stint with the Lions after playing for the team last spring.
In his junior year with the Saints, Clarke served his second year as one of the Saints three captains and finished the year with one goal and five assists. For his career, Clarke has 16 points with three goals and 10 assists in 54 games.
McTurk wrapped up his freshman campaign with the Saints where he compiled a record of 12-7 with three shutouts and a goals against average of 1.50. During the season, McTurk was recognized for his efforts in goal as CCAC Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions while concluding the year on the Second Team All-CCAC team and being named Freshman of the Year.
"Last year we had two players go to St. Louis," continued Gallo. "It was such a class organization for our players and both came back more technically and tactically minded."
Michael Maiorano (JR/Whitby, Ontario, Canada), Eduardo Berruezo (JR/Madrid, Spain) and Garbhan Grant (SR/Letterkenny, Ireland) round out the 2013 Saints team participating in the PDL as members of the Chicago Inferno.
In his first season with the Saints, Maiorano added one goal and three assists in 21 games. His first career goal came in the first 45 seconds of action in the CCAC semifinal match against Cardinal Stritch University.
Eduardo Berruezo wrapped up his junior season, and first as a defenseman, ranked second on the team with 11 points. In 54 career games with the Saints, Berruezo has five goals and 11 assists for 21 points.
Rounding out the Saints joining the Inferno, Garbhan Grant capped off his senior season where he led the team in goals, assists and points. Named CCAC Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions, Grant was also named to the All-CCAC First Team. In 72 career games with the Saints, Grant will leave as the all-time leader in goals, assists and points. This will be his second stint with a PDL club as he spent last season as a member of the St. Louis Lions.
"Although I have not had anyone go through the Inferno system yet, I have heard nothing but positive things about the organization," Gallo continued. "This is a new PDL club but it's definitely trending in the right direction. They have an experienced coaching staff which I have full confidence in when it comes to not only player development, but developing these young men as a whole. The 2014 season looks very promising and with a high percentage of our players playing at this level in the summer they should come into camp with high expectations."
The Saints concluded the 2013 season with a program-best record of 14-7 and an appearance in the conference finals of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC).
