Code took home first place honors as the Saints finished ninth at the Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Holy Cross men's golf team continued their 2014 spring season earlier this week as participants in the 2014 Battle at the Brickyard. After sitting in 12th place at the conclusion of round one, the Saints responded to move into a tie for ninth at the conclusion of the tournament. Matthew Code (SR/Belleville, Ontario, Canada) took home a first place finish in the event, giving him three first place finishes this season.

The Saints opened up round one of the 17-team field with a team score of 320 and a 12th place ranking. Matthew Code led the way with a round total of 73.

Michael Bush (SO/Flossmoor, Ill.) added an 81 in round one while Ted Rider (FR/Vicksburg, Mich.) and Michael Fitzgerald (SR/Flossmoor, Ill.) added scores of 83 to round out the team score of 320. Chris Noble (JR/Niles, Mich.) concluded the opening day with a score of 85 in his first round of the spring season.

Collectively, the Saints improved their team score by seven strokes in the final round and finished the day with a score of 313.

Once again, senior captain Matthew Code led the way for the Saints with an even par round of 72 to finish with a 36-hole score of 145 and a tie for first place individually in the 81-man field.

Ted Rider concluded the event with 78 in round two; five strokes better than his round one score. His 36-hole score of 161 placed him in a tie for 51st individually.

Chris Noble saw significant improvement in round two, finishing the round with a score of 79; six strokes better than round one. His tournament score of 164 placed him in a tie for 63rd individually.

Rounding out the Saints on day two, Michael Fitzgerald finished with a score of 84 and a 36-hole score of 167.

The round two team score of 313 moved the Saints into a tie for ninth place with a 36-hole score of 633.

William Woods took home the first place team honors with a team score of 587. Andy Davis finished in a tie for first place individually with Code after posting rounds of 74 and 71 for a 36-hole score of 145.

The Saints will return to action beginning on Friday, April 11 at the Bethel Invitational held at Blackthorn GC. Round one is scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm.
