Notre Dame, IN – The Holy Cross College women's soccer team began their 2014 season with a tough 3-1 loss against the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils at Saints Field Sunday afternoon.
The Saints started off strong with solid work in the defensive third with Holy Cross goalkeeper Hayley Deisinger stopping two tough shots from the Blue Devils in the first 5 minutes of the match. Lawrence Tech forward Nicole Propst claimed the first goal of the game in the 14th minute. The goal seemed to shake the Saints as they let in another goal in the 16th minute from Blue Devils midfielder Alex Eddington.
The Saints then found their footing and started firing on the Lawrence Tech goal, forcing two saves in the next 6 minutes. In the 26th minute, Mayte Carillo Benavides put the Saints on the board with a great touch past the keeper and a smooth finish into the back of the net. The goal was set up by a perfect long ball pass from senior forward Stacy Rubio.
The first half action wasn't finished yet as the Blue Devils found their third goal right before the halftime whistle in the 44th minute from a wonder strike by Amber Klavon from the top of the 18 yard box.
In the second half, the game was played mostly in the midfield with aggressive action from both sides fighting to win and keep possession. The Saints created several chances forcing three saves out of the Blue Devils keeper, but in the end it wasn't enough as the Saints lost a challenging season opener.
"The ladies had a strong second half performance. I thought we had great possession of the ball which led to the goal," said Saints Head Coach Geriann Druyos. "We need to continue to develop our team offense and defensive rotations for us to improve and find more success in the rest of the season."
The Holy Cross women's soccer team will next be in action Saturday, August 30th at Mount Mercy University. Kickoff is at 5:30 PM.
