(Newark, Ohio) The Holy Cross hockey team won its first game of the year defeating Denison University 5-4 on Saturday night. The Saints bounced back from a 5-4 loss to Denison on Friday night.
The Saints quickly scored in the first 6 minutes of the game on a goal by Tyler Schmatz. Sean Root added another goal 10 minutes later to put the Saints up two. However, Denison was able to cut the lead in half on a goal by John Turchetta with 1:54 left in the first period.
Skyler Rusch tied the game for Denison 10 minutes into the second period. The tie was short lived as Brad Gendel reclaimed the lead for the Saints with 4:04 remaining in the second.
The final period proved to be the most exciting 20 minutes of the weekend. Sean Root added his second goal of game with 11:38 remaining to put the Saints up two. Denison fired back scoring with 6:43 remaining in regulation to cut the Saints lead to one. Holy Cross' Mitch MacLeod went on to score with 2:38 to go in the game to give the Saints a two goal lead. Denison did not go down quietly. They added a quick goal with 1:31 left in the game, but MacLeod's late goal gave the Saints all the offense they needed to earn their first victory of the year.
The Saints will head to Cincinnati for a two game series against Xavier University on October 30 and 31. They will return to the Ice Box on November 7.
