(South Bend, IN) The Saints hosted intrastate rival IPFW this past Saturday. Penalties seemed to be the enemy of the Saints early on. The Saints fell behind and were unable to fully recover.

The Mastodons of IPFW scored first and didn't look back. Chris Treft started the scoring for IPFW just four minutes into the game on a power play. Nine minutes later IPFW added another power play goal to give the Mastodons a 2-0 lead. Just as it looked like the Saints were picking up momentum going into the break, IPFW scored a third goal with 15 seconds left in the first period. The Saints had seven penalties in the first period, and were trailing 3-0.

The Saints tallied their first goal at the 9:52 mark in the second period. The goal was scored by senior captain Levi Burkins and was assisted by Kevin Smith. However, 31 seconds later the Mastodons answered with a goal of their own to keep a 3 goal lead heading into the final period.

Less than 2 minutes into the third period IPFW took a 5-1 lead. The Saints would not give up as Jamie O'Conner started a Saints' scoring streak with 13:30 left in the game. The goal was assisted by Ty Robbins and Tyler Schmatz. Seven minutes later O'Conner assisted Robbins with a goal. Another four minutes later Brad Gendel added his first goal of the game. Schmatz and Burkins recorded the assist. Gendel's goal put the Saints within 1. Unfortunately, the Saints gave up a goal 30 seconds later, and the Saints fell 6-4. Kyle Ressler finished the day with 27 saves for the Saints.

The Saints continue there home stand this weekend against Denison University. The puck drops at 9:00 pm Friday, and 11:30 am Saturday at the Ice Box.
