Bourbonnais, Ill. - The Holy Cross baseball team opened up a three-game series at Olivet Nazarene University with a 6-2 win over the Tigers.
Trey Bickel got the start on the mound for the Saints. Bickel pitched six complete innings, allowing one run off three hits and seven walks. He struck out five Olivet Nazarene batters while picking up his sixth win of the season.
Holy Cross got on the board in the top of the first inning with a Jake Lanning RBI groundout to second base. The Saints would extend their lead in the next inning when Mike Pizzuto hit an RBI single, scoring Corleone Desimone from third.
After Olivet cut the lead to one in the bottom half of the third, Holy Cross would score two more unanswered runs to carry a 4-1 lead into the ninth inning. Lanning would drive in two more Holy Cross base runners with a two-RBI double in the top of the ninth inning.
In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Darwing Ereu stepped back out onto mound for his third inning of work. Despite giving up a run, Ereu induced two groundouts and struck out his third batter of the game to close out the game and record his fourth save on the year.
The Saints are now 27-16 overall with a 17-8 conference record in the CCAC. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday and the series finale will be played shortly after the conclusion of Game 2.
