Deerfield, Ill. - Holy Cross journeyed to Trinity International yesterday for a CCAC doubleheader with the Trojans. The Saints split with TIU losing game one, 15-2, and winning game two, 15-3. The split moves Holy Cross to 28-18 overall and 18-10 in conference play.
Trey Bickel started on the mound for the Saints and despite throwing six strikeouts he was given his third loss of the year. Bickel gave up eight earned runs on three innings pitched. Tommy Goodale and Jacob Lanning led the Saints on offense with two hits each.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second when the Trojans opened the scoring with a solo homerun.
The Saints answered with two runs of their own in the top of the third when Goodale doubled to left centerfield and scored Lanning for the 2-1 lead. Holy Cross's lead was shortlived as the Trojans piled up four runs on six hits in the bottom of the third taking a 5-2 advantage.
The Saints wouldn't score again, but the Trojans scored at least three runs in each of the last three innings to take the 15-2 win.
The Saints exacted some revenge in the second game led by senior Matt Schwitz on the mound who earned his ninth win of the season. Schwitz threw six strikeouts in six innings pitched and gave up only three earned runs. The bats came alive for the Saints with 21 total hits led be Corleone Desimone's four hits. Tommy Goodale smacked his fourth and fifth homeruns of the season against the Trojans as well.
The second game was the complete opposite of game one for the Saints as they scored the first five runs in the top of the second inning highlighted by a three-run shot from Darwing Ereu over the left field wall.
The Trojans stayed close scoring a combined three runs in the next two innings to cut the Saints' lead to two runs.
The Saints never let the Trojans any closer than that and eventually demolished the home team by scoring one run in the fifth, three runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh, and four runs in the eighth.
