Notre Dame, Ind. - Welcome back to Basil's Corner where the greatest mascot in the world, Basil the Saint Bernard sits down and chats with Holy Cross senior athletes. This week Basil sat down with senior catcher Jordan Hinton of the Saints baseball team.
Basil: What's your mindset as you go into the CCAC Tournament this weekend? Nerves? Excitement? Nervous excitement?
Jordan: I am fully focused 100%. It will be my last stretch of games for my college baseball career so it is kind of bittersweet. I'm not really nervous, but more excited.
Basil: How did it feel to smack your first homer of the season against a rival like Olivet Nazarene last week?
Jordan: It was relieving. There is a lot of smack talk on the team, as you could imagine, so it felt good to get one on the boards. Steve Clancy is the only starter without one right now but he claims he is "saving it".
Basil: How has Coach Blondell impacted your game at Holy Cross?
Jordan: He brings a different coaching style to the table that allows me to play the game more the way I want as opposed to the coach at my previous school.
Basil: What's your favorite moment so far in a Holy Cross uniform?
Jordan: That's tough. Either last year when nobody believed in us and we beat Judson the first game of the conference championship, or senior day this year.
Basil: What is your most unusual superstition or pregame ritual?
Jordan: I always have to drink some of the secret stuff.
Basil: Favorite sports movie ever?
Jordan: The Replacements.
Basil: How do you balance school work and your baseball schedule to achieve such high success on and off the field at Holy Cross?
Jordan: It's tough, because I am a really bad procrastinator. I just make sure I do all of my assignments on time and get good grades on papers and tests. That balances out missing class so much.
Basil: Who is the pro baseball player that you try to emulate in your game?
Jordan: Yadier Molina, the catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Basil: Favorite MLB team?
Jordan: I get asked this a lot, but I don't really have a favorite team, just specific players. I enjoy watching the game no matter who is playing.
Basil: Would you rather have the ability to read minds or the ability to read?
Jordan: Definitely the ability to read.
Basil: What's the best spot to hang out in South Bend, Ind.?
Jordan: The boys house on Howard St. aka the Kankakee house.
Basil: Who is the most ridiculous person on the baseball team?
Jordan: I think everyone would agree, Darwing is the most ridiculous.
Basil: Who has the best walkup song on the team? In my opinion it's either you or Corleone Desimone, but I'm just a dog.
Jordan: We had a lot of good ones this year. Besides those two I would have to say Jake Lanning's because it always gets my head noddin'.
Basil: If you could get a free one-week vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go?
Basil: Other than Basil the Saint Bernard, who is your favorite mascot?
Jordan: Chris "Woody" Woodruff because he is always in character, meaning he never takes his mask off.
