(South Bend, IN) The Holy Cross hockey team completed its first sweep of the season by defeating Denison 7-3 on Friday and 8-3 on Saturday. The wins this weekend also gave the Saints a 3-1 record against Denison on the year.
Mitch MacLeod started the scoring for the Saints at the 12:33 mark on Friday night. He was assisted by Levi Burkins and Blair Knafel. A little over a minute later Denison added a goal to tie the game. The Saints regained the lead at 7:40 in the first with a goal by Jamie O'Conner, who was assisted by Ty Robbins and Tyler Schmatz. Four minutes later Denison added a second goal to tie the game. The tie was short lived as Jamie O'Conner added his second goal just 24 seconds later. He was assisted by Kevin Smith and Ty Robbins. The Saints headed into the break up by one.
The second period saw very little action, but was evenly matched. Dan Merkle scored the only goal of the period with 1:35 left. He was assisted by Shane Leo and Mitch MacLeod.
Denison struck first at the 17:05 mark in the third period, cutting the Saints lead to one. The Saints responded less than 30 seconds later with a goal by Ty Robbins. Robbins was assisted by Tyler Schmatz. The Saints added two more goals in the period by Brad Gendel and Sean Root. Jamie O'Conner and Ty Robbins assisted Gendel and Tyler Schmatz and Blair Knafel assisted Root. The Saints were led in goal by Andrew Ebright with 27 saves on the night.
The Saints not only beat Denison on the board, but also in the box. The Saints had 9 penalties in a row including 6 in the first period. They would finish the night with a season high 13 penalties.
On Saturday the Saints scored early and didn't look back. Tyler Schmatz started the scoring off for the Saints less than two minutes into the game. The goal, which was a power play goal, was assisted by Ty Robbins. Less than 30 seconds later the Saints added a second goal by Sean Root. The goal was assisted by Shane Leo and Levi Burkins.
Holy Cross started the scoring in the second period at the 10:58 mark. Brad Gendel put up his first goal of the game. The goal was assisted by Mitch MacLeod and Dan Merkle. Denison finally got on the board at the 9:45 mark in the second. However, the Saints answered with a goal of their own 39 seconds later. The goal was scored by Mitch MacLeod and assisted by Ty Robbins and Dan Merkle. Sean Root added another goal 36 seconds later. He was assisted by Levi Burkins. Denison scored right before the end of the period to cut the Saints lead to 3.
The Saints dominated the third period for the second night in a row. Levi Burkins started the scoring off with a goal at the 7:28 mark. He was assisted by Tyler Schmatz and Ty Robbins. Brad Gendel added his second goal of the game at 3:44. His goal was assisted by Ty Robbins. Denison added a late goal with 2:18 left in the game. Richie Rectenwal scored the final goal of the game with 18 seconds remaining. He was assisted by Brad Gendel and Andrew Chin. It was Chin's first collegiate point. Once again the Saints were led in goal by Andrew Ebright with 24 saves.
The Saints travel to Fort Wayne this weekend to take on rival IPFW for a two game series. The puck drops at 9:10 pm on Friday and 7:50 pm on Saturday at the McMillen Ice Arena.
