Notre Dame, Ind. - The Holy Cross men's basketball team battled back from a late deficit to pick up a conference win on Saturday. The Saints picked up a 75-69 victory over St. Ambrose University, in a pivotal Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup. With the victory, the men's basketball team improves to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in CCAC play.
The Saints trailed 35-33 at the half after giving up a layup as the first half clock expired. The home team struggled to get anything going offensively, shooting 12/31 (38.7%) from the field, while giving up 48.6% on the defensive end. The men's basketball team was unable to capitalize on open layups early on, while allowing the Bees to attack the paint early in transition for easy baskets. Ja'Mare Washington led the attack in the first half with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Ryan Lutz and O'Brien Hobbs each added 6 points in the first stanza.
A bad start saw the men's basketball team trailing by 9 three minutes into the second half. A Washington layup followed by a Brackett jumper cut the lead back down to 5. Freshman Robby Jimenez caught fire midway through the final half scoring 8 points in 90 seconds to cut the Bee lead to one point with 9:49 remaining. Baskets by Nate Miller, Lutz, and Hobbs gave the Saints a 5 piont lead with 5:20 remaining. The men's basketball team withstood a late charge by the visiting St. Ambrose University to take the 75-69 victory.
Holy Cross was led in scoring by freshman Robby Jimenez with 14 points on 4/7 shooting from three. Big man Ja'Mare Washington notched another double-double with 13 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Ryan Lutz and O'Brien Hobbs both scored 11 points in the conference victory. Nate Miller was clutch down the stretch finishing with 11 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the free throw line. Travon Brackett added 9 points on 4/5 shooting for the men's basketball squad.
The Saints (8-7, 4-3) travel Tuesday to take on one of the CCAC's top teams in the Trinity InternationalTrojans (12-3, 5-1) at 3:00pm.
