Damian Marciniak excels in season opener

The 2008 men's soccer season kicked off against the Indiana Tech Warriors yesterday at Holy Cross. The game started off with a flurry of scoring chances by both teams.
Tech had a great scoring chance in the 30th minute, but Saints goalkeeper Damian Marciniak made a diving save that kept the score even at 0-0. In the 32nd minute, Oswaldo Garcia quickly turned the momentum back to the Saints as he buried a shot behind the Indiana Tech goalkeeper. This marked the first goal of the 2008 season for the Saints. In the same minute, the Saints quickly picked up their first yellow card as #5 Richie Campos tripped up a Tech player. The half ended with the Saints leading by one.The second half opened up with Tech firing at the Saints goal. "Damian showed that he could really play making some incredible saves" said Head Coach Thiago Pinto. "All preseason he has been working hard and helping the team in whatever way he can." Indiana Tech finally got through in the 61st minute as Nick Abdoo fired one over Marciniak. The Warriors continued with their relentless shooting and in the 76th minute Elliott Everson of Tech was able to put one away after a bad bounce off a Holy Cross defender.
In the 83rd minute, Kory Anderson of Indiana Tech received a yellow card, but the Saints were unable to take advantage. The game ended with the Warriors edging the Saints 2-1. The Saints will begin a weekend road trip Friday night at DePauw University, and then they will be at Washburn University on Saturday afternoon . "This was a good test for our mostly freshman team," said Pinto, "last year this team beat us 5 - 0!"
