University Park, Ill. - The Holy Cross men's basketball team was unable pull of a comeback victory against CCAC foe Governors State University Saturday afternoon. The Saints came back from down 11 in the second half to hold a 3 point lead with 4.4 seconds, but a three at the buzzer sent the game into overtime where the Saints were unable to knock down free throws. The Jaguars pulled out the 99-96 victory in extra time as Madison McCaffrey's three point attempt flew off the rim as the final horn sounded. With the loss, the Saints drop to 12-14 on the season, and 8-9 in CCAC play. Governors State improves to 9-17 and 6-11 on the year.
Holy Cross was led by Madison McCaffrey who scored a game-high 27 points for the Saints, while connecting on 5-7 from three and 10-11 free throws. Fellow senior guard O'Brien Hobbs finished with 21 points and 4 assists on the evening. Ryan Lutz scored 15 points, while Ja'Mare Washington had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Big man Dom Gatling went 5-6 from the field to score 10 points and grab 5 rebounds in 12 minutes of play.
The Saints travel to Trinity Christian College Wednesday evening to take on the Trolls at 8:30pm in a must win CCAC matchup.
