Notre Dame, IN. The Holy Cross College men's soccer opened their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference season by hosting St. Xavier University this afternoon for a 4:00pm kickoff. The men battled tough, but fell in the 101 minute on a penalty kick. With the loss, the Saints fall to 4-3 on the year and 0-1 in CCAC play
Both teams struggled to get anything going on the offensive end for most of the first half. The Saints outshot the Cougars 7-5, but St. Xavier was able to score in the 32 minute to give them a 0-1 lead going into halftime.
Early in the second half, Ilja Golubevs lined up for a free kick just outside the box and was able to slide the ball past the wall of defenders and just outside the goalies reach to tie the match up. The play of the game however, came from Holy Cross freshman goalie, Lewis Tomlinson, with the fingertip, leaping save on a one on one situation in the 85 minute.
Both defenses tightened up for the remainder of the second half, and we enter the first OT tied 1-1.
Holy Cross outshot their opponent 3-1 in the first overtime, but were unable to capitalize and we enter the second overtime.
One minute into the second overtime, Holy Cross committed a foul inside the box, which gave St. Xavier a penalty kick. Despite his great save earlier in the game, Tomlinson was unable to get the PK save and the Saints fell 1-2.
Men's Soccer will be back in action Saturday September 23, when they travel Cardinal Stritch University for a 7:30pm (CT) kickoff.
