The Holy Cross hockey team kicked of their inaugural Holy Cross Hockey tournament by playing rival IPFW on Friday night.
The Mastodons scored two goals in the first 8 minutes of the game. The Saints answered with a goal of their own scored by Jamie O'Conner. He was assisted by Ty Robbins and Dan Merkle. However, with 1:47 left in the first period Austin Wappes scored for the Mastodons giving them a two goal lead going into the second period. Mitch MacLeod and Sean Root managed to tie the game in the second with a goal each, but with 38 seconds remaining in the period Kip Kinder scored for the Mastodons giving them the lead. Just 29 seconds into the third Adam Turney scored for IPFW giving them a two goal lead. Three minutes later Chris Treft added another goal for the Mastodons. Tyler Schmatz scored for the Saints at the 7:57 mark to cut the lead to two. But any chance for a Saints comeback was spoiled when Kyle Hartman scored just 22 seconds after the Holy Cross goal. The Saints fell to the Mastodons 7-4.
The Saints bounced back on Saturday morning when they played Robert Morris. Tyler Schmatz scored the only goal of the first period at the 18:16 mark. He was assisted by Mitch MacLeod. Ty Robbins started the scoring in the second period. His goal was assisted by Mitch MacLeod and Sean Root. At 13:35 the Saints added a third goal scored by Tyler Schmatz. His goal was assisted by Brad Gendel and Andrew Ebright. Holy Cross jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 1:21 left in the second period on an unassisted Mitch MacLeod goal. 54 seconds into the third Shane Leo scored the fifth goal of the game for the Saints. He was assisted by Dan Merkle. Four minutes later Mitch MacLeod added his second goal of the game, a power play goal that was assisted by Jamie O'Conner. With 4:10 left Jamie O'Conner scored a power play goal for the Saints. His goal was assisted by Mitch MacLeod and Steve Bridgeman. Andrew Ebright earned his second shutout of the year.
With the win on Saturday the Saints played in the championship game of the tournament, once again facing rival IPFW. The Saints started the scoring off with an unassisted power play goal scored by Jamie O'Conner five minutes into the game. Jamie O'Conner added a second power play goal with 5:58 remaining in the first period. The goal was assisted by Tyler Schmatz. The Saints finished the period with a two goal lead. The Mastodons gained momentum in the second period after Channing Lamborn scored for IPFW three minutes into the second period. Tanner Warner scored the second goal of the period for the Mastodons at the 13:41 mark, and Adam Turney scored just 33 seconds later to give IPFW their first lead of the day. Kyle Hartman scored with 1:05 left in the second period to give the Mastodons a two goal lead.
Jamie O'Conner and the Saints refused to go away. O'Conner scored his third goal of the game with 11:53 left in the game. He was assisted by Ty Robbins and Richie Rectenwal. Two minutes later O'Conner scored the tying goal for the Saints. This goal was assisted by Tyler Schmatz and Andrew Ebright. However, less than two minutes later Joe Schneider scored for the Mastodons as they retook the lead. The Saints ended up falling by the score of 5-4.
After an off week the Saints will travel to the University of Michigan-Flint for a two game series. They will return home for the final time this season on February 12 and 13 to take on the Hoosiers of Indiana University.
