Saints Come Up Short in Flint

(Flint, MI) The Saints travelled to Flint, Michigan this past weekend to take on the University of Michigan-Flint. In the season opener against Flint the Saints fell 9-3 and 6-3 at the Ice Box. UMF entered the weekend averaging 5 goals a game, while the Saints were averaging 4 goals per game.
On Friday UMF jumped out to an early lead. Michael Schunot scored at the 15:11 mark in the first period. Joseph Berry added another goal for Flint less than 5 minutes later to take a 2 - 0 lead into the first intermission.
The Saints responded in the second period as Mitch MacLeod scored for the Saints at the 13:14 mark. He was assisted by Tyler Schmatz and Steve Bridgeman. After cutting the lead in half Justin McNeice scored for Flint at the 6:59 mark to put them back up by two.
Tyler Schmatz scored at the 10:03 mark in the third, but the Saints could not tie the game and eventually fell 3 - 2. Schmatz was assisted by Mitch MacLeod and Jamie O'Conner.
On Saturday the Saints jumped out to an early lead. Shane Leo scored less than two minutes into the first period. However, Flint came back in the second period scoring two goals less than 2 minutes apart. The first goal was scored by Jacob Nicholas at 5:48. The second goal was scored by Jordan Macco at 4:40. Both goals were assisted by Michael Schunot.
Neither team scored over the final 20 minutes. The Saints once again came up one goal short. Holy Cross falls to 9 - 16 on the year.
The Saints return home this weekend for the final games of the year. They will play host to Indiana University. The puck drops at 9:15 pm on Friday and 2:45 pm on Saturday. Saturday will be senior night for Levi Burkins and Richie Rectenwal.
