Club Lacrosse - Wed, Apr. 21, 2010
(Notre Dame, Ind.) Despite being ranked #1 according to laxpower.com and claiming the South division championship, the Saints lacrosse program is still hungry for more.

"Finishing with a 12 - 0 record this season was a great accomplishment for this program," said Head Coach Mike Hodge. "However, we have one goal in mind and that is to win our first championship." Last year the Saints were one game away from claiming the league title before losing the University of Wisconsin - Red 6 - 4 in the final game of the year.

This year the road to the championship will begin against St. Norbert University at 1pm at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. This will be the first meeting between the two squads. The Green Knights come into the game with a 5 - 3 record and winners of the North division. Currently on a two game slide, the Saints will look to take advantage of the Knights defense which has given up an average of 9 goals in their three losses.

At 12 - 0, Holy Cross has put up big numbers during their games this season. Averaging nearly 10 goals a game, the Saints swept the South division and have scored at least 11 goals or more in their last 4 games. The team's defense has been stifling all year holding opponents to fewer than 2.5 goals a game. Goalkeepers Jeff Byers and Fritz Schoenhut have been terrific this season stepping up and making big saves.

Should the Saints advance past the first round they will face the winner of the Southern Illinois and Northwestern University game for a spot in the championship game. Holy Cross defeated SIU at Benedictine University 11 - 6 earlier this month. The Saints have not faced Northwestern University this year, but are 1 - 0 all time against the Wildcats.

On the other side of the bracket the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse will face off with Western Illinois University and the University of Wisconsin will play tournament host Wisconsin-Platteville. All games are scheduled to start at 1pm.
