(Platteville, Wis.) The men's lacrosse team took to the field Saturday afternoon in the first and second rounds of the Great Lakes Lacrosse League (GLLL) championships.
Up first for the Saints were the Green Knights of St. Norbert. The Knights won the North division and were seated eighth. Falling down 1 - 0, the Saints responded with 10 straight unanswered goals and cruised to an 11 - 2 opening round victory.
The goals were spread out between 5 different players. Pat Pirozzi netted 4 goals in the opening round game and Reed Looney added three for the Saints. Brian Benedict recorded 6 assists and put in one goal.
In game two the Saints played Northwestern University. The Wildcats were seated fourth and beat the Saluki's of Southern Illinois 8 - 3 to advance.
Once again the Saints gave up an early goal, but responded with 4 unanswered goals of their own. However, the Wildcats battled right back and scored despite being down two men. Heading into the fourth quarter, Holy Cross led 6 - 4. Northwestern cut the two goal lead in half midway through the fourth, but the Saints answered with their next possession to regain a two goal advantage.
With two minutes remaining in the game, Senior Levi Burkins beat the Northwestern goalkeeper to put the Saints up 8 - 6. However, less than 30 seconds later the Wildcats were able to pull within one. On the ensuing face-off the Saints were able to gain possession and burn valuable seconds off the clock, but with 20 seconds remaining in the game Holy Cross turned the ball over which Northwestern turned into a fast break opportunity. NU's final shot sailed over the goal and the Saints hung onto an 8 - 7 victory and a birth into the championship game.
Holy Cross will take on the University of Wisconsin - red in a re-match of last years championship. The game is slated to start Sunday afternoon at 1:45pm (cst) at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
