(South Bend, Ind.) Led by sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Heston (Plymouth, Ind.) the Saints earned their first win of the season over visiting Trine University Wednesday afternoon at the Invaders complex.
In their final non-conference match-up of the year the Saints welcomed the Thunder an NCAA DIII member. Despite being outshot 23 - 5 on the day, the Saints held on for a 1 - 0 victory. Heston stayed busy in goal making 10 saves throughout.
"The team knew that to win the game they could not relax or lose concentration, especially with a team like Trine constantly attacking." said second year Head Coach Carlos Reynolds. "I think we learned from our previous game loosing in over time."
Midfielder Maeve Gallagher - Nowlen (Philadelphia, Penn.) provided the lone goal of the match in the 31st minute. Nowlen chipped a ball right over Thunder goalkeeper Kate Wegert for her first goal of the season. Valerie Patout (New Iberia, La.) recorded the assist on the play.
"I noticed they were marking our forwards really well and closing our space," said Coach Reynolds. "I decided to change the offense moving Maeve to the midfield and it pay off right away, she had more space and took a wonderful shot to score. As soon as she took the shot I knew it was going in."
The Thunder kept the pressure on in the second half, but could not answer with a goal. The Saints defense held strong and kept the Thunder forwards honest drawing them offsides 7 times.
"It is always great to have your first win, our team really played together and part of the success was that they were communicating well on the field," said Reynolds. "Our keeper, Jessica Heston did an excellent job under the goal, she made incredible saves to keep Trine University scoreless."
Holy Cross (1 - 7) will begin their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule this Saturday, September 25th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm against Trinity International University. The Trojans are currently 5 - 2 on the year and on a 2 game winning streak.
