(South Bend, Ind.) The Saints welcomed Adrian College Friday night to the Ice Box for their home ACHA opener.
The Saints and Bulldogs traded goals throughout, but it was Adrians Kalon Foss scoring the final goal with 3:57 remaining in the third period to give Adrian a 5 - 4 road victory.
The Bulldogs started the game scoring just 12 seconds into the game as Cole Rochowiak beat Saints goalkeeper Andrew Ebright (Ypsilanti, Mich.). Chris Rodriguez (Valparaiso, Ind.) quickly answered for the Saints a minute later to even the game at 1. With 14:48 remaining in the first period Brendon Gendel (South Bend, Ind.) gave Holy Cross their only lead on the night. Adrian answered before the first period ended to tie the game at 2.
Just seconds into the second period the Bulldogs scored on a powerplay goal to take a 3 - 2 lead. Tyler Schmatz (South Bend, Ind.) evened the game with a powerplay goal of his own at the 9:50 mark for the Saints. However. the Bulldogs added a late goal in the period to take a 4-2 lead heading into the final period.
Gendel added his second goal of the game with 7:15 remaining in the thrid, but Adrian once again added a late goal in a period to escape with a 5-4 win.
Ebright finished with 41 saves on the night. Holy Cross will host IPFW next Friday and Saturday at the Ice Box. Puck drops at 7:15pm on Friday and 4pm on Saturday.
