The Holy Cross men's basketball team opened their season Friday night against Waldorf College (IA). The event marked the first ever varsity game for the Saints basketball team. "It was a historic moment in Holy Cross athletics" said Athletic Director Nathan Walker. "I was impressed with the amount of support and energy from the students, faculty, family, and friends of Holy Cross."
The first half started at an upbeat tempo as both teams exchanged baskets. However, it was not long into the second half when the Saints faced their first challenge of the season. Sophomore point guard Mark Wilkins suffered a strained ligament in his ankle when a Waldorf player landed on his foot. The Saints quickly fell behind and never regaining the lead. "We got off to a quick start, but the intensity didn't carry through the second half," said Head Coach Steve Baumgartner."The offense needed to be run smarter and smoother."
Despite losing the game 88- 59, the Saints look to rebound against the University of Northwestern Ohio Tuesday night. "I saw a lot of positives, but there were things that needed to be worked out," Coach Baumgartner said. " We will work on those, and be prepared for our next game." Elliott Jones Jr. led the team with 17 points and junior guard Sean Dillon came off the bench shooting 5 - 10 from the field, including 4 - 6 from behind the line.
