(Mishawaka, Ind.) The HCC men's basketball team traveled across town to Bethel College to participate in the Gates Automotive Classic. On Friday night the Saints battled host Bethel and on Saturday took on Marian University.
Tied at 17 apiece midway through the first half the Pilots went on a 14 - 3 run to take a commanding 11 point lead and they never looked back. At half the Saints trailed 41 - 27. The second half wasn't any easier for the Saints. Bethel led by as many as 32 points and finished the game with an 87 - 56 opening night victory.
The Saints committed 20 turnovers to the Pilot's 10 and shot just 36% from the field. The Saints were also outrebounded 47 - 26 in the game. Bethel's Caleb Laidig led all scorers with 19. Junior Justin Breveard (South Bend, Ind.) led the Saints with 17 points.
Saturday afternoon the Saints played a much closer game with the Knights from Marian University. Earlier in the season the Saints lost to Marian 81 - 46 in Indianapolis.
Trailing by as many as 11 in the first half the Saints battled back and closed the gap to 5 before the half ended. The Saints battled hard and pulled within 3 points with 14 minutes remaining inthe game, but were unable to overcome the deficit and Marian pulled out a 58 - 48 win.
"It was nice to come and play much better after the loss to Bethel on Friday," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn. "We will hopefully continue to battle in our games and keep getting better as the year progresses."
The Saints continued to struggle shooting the ball going 34% from the field including 2-of-10 from behind the arc. Taylor Williams (South Bend, Ind.) and Justing Breveard each scored 13 points for the Saints and Breveard pulled down 7 rebounds in the loss.
The Saints fall to 1 - 14 on the year and will travel to Goshen College next Thursday, December 16th, to take on the Maple Leafs. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
