(Whiting, Ind.) The Saints made the trip to Calumet College of St. Joseph to take on the Crimson Wave in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) match-up Wednesday evening.
In a back and forth first half the score was tied 6 different times and both teams swapped leads 7 times throughout the half. It looked as though Calumet was going to pull away from the Saints midway through the first half, but Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) nailed a 3-point bomb with 9:06 remaining to pull the Saints within 2.
Holy Cross trailed by one to start the second half. However, Calumet quickly built a 10 point lead with 12 minutes remaining. The Saints crawled back into the game and managed to cut the Crimson Wave lead to as little as two points twice throughout the half.
With 33 seconds left in the game Jillian DeLucia (Fishers, Ind.) hit a pair of free-throws that made it a one possession game. Unfortunately for the Saints that was as close as they got as Calumet hit their free-throws down the stretch and sealed their third conference win on the year with a final score of 62-56.
Malinowski led the Saints with a game high 21 points and 4 assists. Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) recorded her 12th double-double on the year scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. DeLucia chipped in 13 points for the Saints. Leading Calumet in scoring was Lisa Upshaw with 21 points.
Despite only turning the ball over 9 times the Saints struggled from the field shooting 30% and only 14% from behind the arc on 4-of-28 shooting. Calumet shot 35% from the field, but made 9-of-19 from behind the arc.
The Saints (3-17, 0-4) will finally return to the Pfeil Center this Saturday, January 15th, as they host the Trojans of Trinity International University (12-9, 4-1).
