(Notre Dame, Ind.) The Holy Cross athletic department will be adding men's and women's outdoor track & field as a varsity sport starting in the spring of 2012. Current men's and women's cross country coach Jason Fransted will be heading up the newly added track program.
Initially, the program will be focusing their efforts on the running events. The track program will become the sixth varsity sport offered by Holy Cross. The athletic department is members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and competes in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC).
"We are excited to add track to our athletic department next spring," said Athletic Director Bob Schermerhorn. "I am confident that our cross country and track programs will benefit each other and become a mainstay at Holy Cross for years to come."
Holy Cross becomes the seventh institution in the CCAC to provide outdoor track and field. Currently Holy Cross offers men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's golf at the NAIA level. Additionally, Holy Cross offers hockey (ACHA DIII), lacrosse (GLLL), and cheerleading.
"I am very pleased to have track as a new addition to the sports programs at Holy Cross," said Head Coach Jason Fransted. "It will definitely raise the excitement level for our runners and recruits."
