Women's Basketball - Wed, Jan. 26, 2011
(Palos Heights, Ill.) In an important battle for conference positioning the Saints came up short on the road to the Trolls of Trinity Christian College Wednesday night in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play.
In their first meeting of the year the Trolls opened up conference play at the Pfeil Center with a 58-52 road victory over the Saints.
Led behind Lauren Malinowski's (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) 22 points and 5 assiststhe Saints opened the contest with a 10-2 run and looked as though they were heading to their second conference win on the year, but the Trolls slowly climbed back into the game and took their first lead at the 10:59 mark.
Tied at 29 with 6:58 remaining in the game the Trolls went on a 10-2 run sparked by Trinity's Tiffany Deckinga's back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers. Deckinga finished with a game high 28 points including 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
The Saints closed the Trolls halftime lead to 6 after Malinowski hit a lay up as time expired. Trailing 56-47 with 14:34 remaining in the game, the Saints went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 3. However, the Saints were unable to regain the lead and the Trolls held on for an 86-74 conference win.
Freshman Jillian DeLucia (Fishers, Ind.) finished the night with 18 points and 4 assits. Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) added 14 points for the Saints.
Despite shooting 52% from the field, the Saints struggled from 3-point range going 18% on 3-of-16 shooting. Holy Cross was also outrebounded on the night 42-24.
The loss drops the Saints overall record to 4-20 on the year and 1-6 in the CCAC. The loss drops the Saints to the 7th and final spot in the standings.
Holy Cross will continue their conference schedule this Saturday at the Pfeil Center against Judson University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm and can be heard live on www.rrsn.com or on www.hcsaints.com. The Saints defeated the Eagles on December 4th, 67-54.
