(Notre Dame, Ind.) Trailing by as many as 22 early in the second half, the Saints did not give up and crawled their way back into the game against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) leader Cardinal Stritch.
Trailing 41-22 at half, the league leading Wolves looked as though they were going to easily get their 21st victory of the season. However, the Saints battled back going on a 13-2 run that cut the Wolves lead to 9 with 13:45 remaining in the game.
"I am very proud of the incredible effort our ladies gave today," said Head Coach Phil D'Amico. "When your down by 22 points early your team can go one of two ways, and our women came back and battled to the final whistle."
After both sides traded baskets the Wolves managed to build up a 15 point lead at the 9:20 mark. Looking as though they were completely exhausted, the Saints didn't give up and battled back to pull within 6 points.
Holy Cross trailed by 6 after Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) nailed a 3 pointer with 1:15 remaining, but Stritch hit their free throws down the stretch and held on to a 71-63 road conference victory Saturday afternoon at the Pfeil Center.
"I could not be more proud of the game we played and the total team effort given," Coach D'Amico said. "That was a very good basketball team we played and we hung right there with them."
Holy Cross forced 19 turnovers and converted them into 20 points, but they were outrebounded 51-31 and gave up 12 second chance points.
Freshman Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) led the Saints with 20 points and Malinowski finished the game with 16. Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, Mich.) added 9 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Lisa Lawrence led Cardinal Stritch with 20 points.
The Saints will concluded their home regular season schedule Wednesday, February 16th, at the Pfeil Center. Jalisa Edwards (Chicago, Ill.) and Tanesha Varnardo (Markham, Ill.) will be honored before the start of the game.
