(Notre Dame, Ind.) It came down to free throws with less than two seconds on the clock, but the Saints were unable to push the game into overtime as the visiting Crimson Wave of Calumet College took a 67-65 conference road victory home with them.
Senior Jalisa Edwards (Chicago. Ill.) scored the first 5 points for the Saints as both teams trade baskets early on. Tied at 29 with just under a minute left the Wave closed the half with a 4-0 run to take a 33-29 halftime lead.
The Saints kept the game close and were leading 61-56 with just under 5 minutes remaining, but Holy Cross could not close out the game only managing 6 points over the final 4:38 seconds.
Despite turning the ball over only 13 times and outrebounding the Wave 40-37 the Saints could not close out their home 2010-11 schedule with a win.
The Wave received great play from their bench outscoring the Holy Cross bench 23-4. The Saints shot 43% from the field but only went 6-of-23 from behind the arc.
Leading all scorers was freshman forward Lindsey Steffen with 24 points. Senior Tanesha Varnardo (Marham, Ill.) chipped in 12 points and freshman Jillian DeLucia (Fishers, Ind.) added 11 for the Saints.
Lisa Upshaw led Calumet with 18 points. The Saints will close out the regular season this Saturday at Trinity International University before heading into the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) tournament.
Congratulations to both Tanesha Varnardo and Jalisa Edwards as they closed out their Holy Cross home careers. Family, friends, and the Holy Cross community honored both of them for their accomplishments after the game.
