Head coaches in every sport will tell you that they want to surround themselves with great assistants. Here at Holy Cross that holds true with the Saints hockey program.
Holy Cross goalie coach Jack Lafferty has dedicated his life to developing goalies in the Michiana area. This past year, Jack was added to the HCC hockey staff that led the Saints to a program best 21 wins. The Saints compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA DIII).
This year the Michiana High School Hockey League is introducing a new end-of-the-year award. In recognition of the unique challenges faced in the goaltending position, the league has developed an Outstanding Goalie Award. This award is presented to the MHSHL goalie that has not only played outstanding this year but also in recognition of his previous years of hard work, dedication and giving back to the hockey community.
Jack was an integral part in the decision of who would be the recipient of this award.Jack is an institution at the Ice Box working with goalies.  But most do not know how long Jack has been giving back to the game he dearly loves. Jack was an integral part in the creation of the Michiana High School Hockey League over 30 years ago. He has not only coached Riley, Penn, Adams, and Marian but he has also sat on the MHSHL Board in various positions over the years. The gift of his time and wisdom that the MHSHL has been given is unfathomable.  Today Jack continues to share his wisdom within the high school league, but also in the college and professional arena as well.
"Jack has brought a lifetime of experience and hockey knowledge to the HCC hockey program," said Head Coach Bill Schmatz. "Through His enthusiasm and dedication, he has helped make us a better team on and off the ice. We are very fortunate to have Jack on board."
In recognition of his years of support for high school hockey community, his willingness to help anyone who asks and his positive influence on all players he comes in contact with, this outstanding goalie award is named in his honor and will be known as the Jack Lafferty Award.
