(French Lick, Ind.) The Holy Cross men's golf team began their 2011 season with a first place finish at "The Thrill at the Hill" tournament hosted by Indiana Tech. As a team the Saints shot a two round 622.
Leading all scorers was Holy Cross junior Eric Hartstein (South Bend, Ind.). Hartstein shot a two day 9 over par 149. Indiana Tech golfer Mark Beneke also shot a two day score 149. After a one hole playoff, Hartstein was able to capture his third tournament of the year. Last September Hartstein won the Battle at Blackthorn as well as the New Balance Invitational.
After day one the Saints trailed leader Missouri Baptist University by three strokes and Madonna University by two strokes. After a day one team score of 318 the Saints bounced back on day two and shot a second round 304.
The par 70, 6,739 yard course proved difficult for many teams. In addition to the long holes, the teams had to play through cold and windy conditions both days.
"Despite the weather conditions the guys kept battling," said Coach Holt. "This was a great building block and I am excited for the remainder of the spring schedule."
Mike Prior (Schoolcraft, Mich.) shot a two round 152 placing him third overall. Tyler Alge (Huron, Ohio) placed 14th shooting a 159. Tyler Kanczuzewski (South Bend, Ind.) and Matt Adler (Joliet, Ill.) rounded out the top 5 shooting a 163 and 174 respectively.
"I felt they played really well in our first tournament of the season," said Head Coach Tim Holt. "The team had only been outside a couple of days before the start of the tournament."
The Saints will be back in action at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University this Friday and Saturday.
