(South Bend, Ind.) The men's golf team continued their winning ways this weekend with a first place finish at the Spring Battle at Blackthorn hosted by Bethel College.
The Saints finished 1st out of a 13 team field which included conference foes St. Francis and Olivet Nazarene University.
As a team the Saints shot a 26 over par 314 in the one day event beating out St. Francis (IL) by 7 strokes. Mike Prior led the way for the Saints shooting a 1 over par 73 on the day. Bethel's Greggy Lebold beat out Prior in a one hole playoff for top individual honors.
Rounding out the Saints was Senior Tyler Alge shooting a 79, Eric Hartstein and Tyler Kanczuzewski each finished with an 81 while Matthew Code finished with an 82 on the day.
"I thought we played good despite the weather conditions," said Head Coach Tim Holt. "The scores were high but this should give us confidence heading into the conference tournament next weekend."
The Saints will compete in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) tournament on April 22nd and 23rd which will be hosted by Olivet Nazarene University.
A first place finish at the conference tournament would give the Saints an automatic bid into the NAIA national championships. The 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships will be held May 24th - 27th at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. In the latest NAIA Top 25 men's golf poll, the Saints received 5 votes.
