Baseball - Thu, May 5, 2011
(Kalamazoo, Mich.) The Saints baseball team finished up their inaugural varsity season this week with a double header at Kalamazoo College in a late season non- conference match-up.
In game one, the Saints took a 1 - 0 lead in the top of the second. A leadoff single by Ben McDonald, an error, two fielder's choice and a single by Dan Wawrzusin allowed Pat Huyge to lay down a sacrifice bunt that brought home Sam Rubino.
Throwing a no hitter through 5 innings, Pat Sweeney kept the Hornets off the scoreboard. It wasn't until the 6th inning with one out when Kalamazoo finally broke up the no hit bid and tied the game at 1.
In the bottom of the eighth inning Kalamazoo pushed across the winning run with a two out rally to take the first game 2 - 1.
In the second game, Kalamazoo scored 11 times in the first three innings including 5 times in the second and third innings to complete the two game sweep with a 12 - 3 victory over the Saints.
The Saints scored twice in the fifth and once in the seventh but left 10 men on base including 3 in the 3rd and 3 in the 7th.
The Saints finished the season with a 2 - 37 overall record and a 1 - 29 conference record. Leading the Saints this season was Ryan Trosko with a .397 on base percentage and 15 RBI's. Dan Wawrzusin led the Saints with 38 hits in 39 games batting .302 and scoring 17 runs.
