(Notre Dame, IN)  The Saints opened up their season with 5-2 loss to visiting Moody Bible at Invaders Soccer Complex on Saturday.

The score was not indicative of how the game really was.  Senior Goalkeeper, Damian Marciniak, (Michigan City, IN) was given a red card fifteen minutes into the contest with a handball ruled outside the box.  Junior Robert Campos, (La Ceiba, Honduras) would fill in admirably in the net, and the Saints would play down a man for nearly 75 minutes.

"The red card was very unfortunate, but I am proud of how our kids responded.  They battled very hard and were able to score two goals with 10 men.  I am curious to see how the game would have gone if not for the red card.  But every team has to deal with adversity, and I'm proud of our boys and how they responded, said Coach Rhett Zych."

The Saints took the lead in the 40th on Free Kick from sophomore Garbhan Grant (Letterkenng, Ireland).  There was a scrum in front of the net and the ball was misplayed by Moody Bible and wound up in the back in the net.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead into halftime down a man, but the second half performance by Moody Bible proved to be too much for the Saints.  Moody Bible scored in the 49th, 53rd, and 57th on a penalty kick.  These 3 goals in an eight minute span really put the Saints on their heels.

The Saints, however, did not let up.  Senior Brooks McDonald (Spring Lake, MI) redirected a header off of  Khiry Hollowell (Indianapolis, IN) from a corner kick from Grant.

"I thought the boys really gave it their all in this game.  The three goals in 8 minutes really put us up against the wall, but when Brooks headed in that corner it  gave a us a ray of hope late in the game," said Zych.

That ray of hope would not last long as Moody Bible scored less than a minute later to push the lead to 4-2, and that goal proved to be the back breaker for the Saints.

"It was a tough situation, and we certainly have things to work on from this point on in our season.  I think it is important that we learn from this game and apply those lessons for our next game against Alma," said Zych.

Moody Bible would add a late goal with 6 seconds to go, and the final tally would be 5-2.  The Saints now drop to 0-1 on the season.  They travel this Thursday to take on Alma College.  Game time is for 4 p.m.
