Men's Soccer Wins Wild Game Over Huntington University
Men's Soccer - Wed, Sep. 21, 2011
The action began in the 8th minute when senior goalkeeper Damian Marciniak (Michigan City, Indiana) made a diving stop on a penalty kick to keep the game tied at zero.
Just a few moments later, sophomore Niko Jelicic (Sucuraj, Croatia) scored off on penalty kick of his own to give Holy Cross an early 1-0 lead.
The game was mostly back and forth until Huntington scored two unanswered goals in the 33rd minute (also off a penalty kick) and in the 59th minute, which gave the Foresters a 2-1 advantage.
Late in the second half, as the Saints were desperately trying to claw back into the game, Holy Cross netted only the second conventional goal in the game on a point blank shot from senior Brooks McDonald (Spring Lake, Michigan) after a feed from Alexander Clarke (Liverpool, England) off a free kick from junior midfielder Garbhan Grant (Letterkenng, Ireland).
The goal drew the score even at two goals apiece, but let the Saints gain momentum which ultimately would give them the go ahead goal in the 88th minute off the forth penalty kick in the game.
Niko Jelicic was at it again, sending his second goal of the game past the Forester's goalkeeper, and stealing the game for the Saints.
"I was real impressed with the way the guys fought back tonight", said head coach Rhett Zych. "We kept our heads up and battled for all ninety minutes and earned ourselves a W...and I'm proud of that."
Zych also praised his goalkeeper for a strong performance, "Damian made the saves when it counted that kept us in the game...he didn't get discouraged when we were down 2-1, instead he raised his game, made 9 saves, and helped us get the win."
The victory puts the Saints ahead in the win column, as their record improves to 3-2-0.
The Saints are back home on Saturday, September 24th at 3:00 PM at the Indiana Invaders Complex.
