(Notre Dame, Indiana) The Cougars of St. Xavier University visited the Saints at the Indiana Invaders Complex Saturday afternoon.
St. Xavier (6-5 (4-1 CCAC)) came out firing on all cylinders Saturday, giving goalkeeper Daminan Marciniak (Michigan City, Indiana) and the Saints defense all they could handle early.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute after some early pressure on the Saints.
Nerves were high, and the Cougars were not backing down, scoring again just four minutes later to open the game up to 2-0.
"I told my guys to get their heads in the game", said head coach Rhett Zych. "I wanted them to not give up with 80 minutes left in the game."
After the Saints calmed themselves down and found out what they were doing wrong, they were able to mount a comeback of their own. The Saints turned to offense, with shots on goal by Niko Jelicic (Sucuraj, Croatia), Edy Berruezo (Madrid, Spain), Luis Delgado (Lexington, Kentucky), and TJ Hendzel (Lisle, Illinois). Nobody found the net, despite heavy pressure and hustle. Halftime finally ended with the Saints still trailing trailing by two goals.
"During halftime I told the guys the goals would come if we kept up the pressure. We just needed to be smart, keep shooting, and good things would happen", exlpained Zych.
And shoot the Saints would. The Saints kept grinding in the second half - and at one point tried five corner kicks in a row - but still could not find the back of the net.. The Saints would finish with 9 corners and 15 shots while the visiting Cougars offense kept firing all game, tallying 32 shots.
Marciniak made 15 saves, including several breakaways and a penalty kick. The Saints record is now 3-6-1. Their next home game is October 15th against Trinity Christian College at 3:00 PM.
